The Exway X1 is one of the fastest electric skateboards and offers its riders a nice combination of traditional longboarding with the high tech electric riding mode.

The regenerative braking is another good feature that allows the battery life to be extended as the board brakes. It is also water and splash proof so riding in all conditions is fine with this board.

All About the Fastest Electric Skateboards

We have compiled all our knowledge on finding the fastest electric skateboard on this list. Hopefully our buying guide can answer all your questions.

What Determines the Fastest Speed?

1. Motor

The greater the motor power of the e boards motor usually equates to the greater high speeds. We recommend choosing boards of 1000 Watts or over, for greater speeds. Having a board with powerful motors also has the ability to counteract the weight of riders so look for the most powerful board when shopping.

There are two different types of motors in electric skateboards.

Hub motors: these motors are located inside the wheels of the electric skateboard. These boards are thinner, easier to maintain and generally less expensive. The wheel drive provides less torque than belt motors.

Belt motors: belt motors are fitted to the underside of the e boards. A belt motor louder, produce more torque which makes them more efficient but are more expensive due to the belt drive.

2. Terrain

It is important to note that manufacturers have calculated max speed traveling on a flat, even surface. Traveling on rough terrains or up hills won't see the board travel as fast due to the greater resistance and power required to navigate tough surfaces.

3. Wheel Size

In general, large wheels have high speed but lower acceleration and have less torque and agility. Smaller wheels have better torque and acceleration but lesser max speed.

4. Battery Remaining

As the battery pack runs out of charge, its ability to produced high speeds for prolonged periods significantly decreases as the board is unable to produce the power required. Ensure you board is fully charged before riding or carry a spare battery pack with you.

Check out this awesome video - which is a culmination of all these factors leading to a world record for the fastest speed travelled on an electric skateboard - 68 MPH?!

5.Weight of the Rider and Weight Capacity of the Board

The weight of the rider also plays a significant part in producing fast speeds in an electric skateboard. The general rule is the heavier the rider, the slower the electric skateboard will go. It is best to use the weight capacity of an electric skateboard as an important consideration when purchasing. If you want to hit these top speeds is is imperative that you fit in the weight capacity so to ensure the speed isn't hindered.

Other Good Features in the Fastest Electric Skateboards

  1. Wide wheelbase or deck

As you could imagine when you are hitting these fast speeds you want to be fully balanced. That's why I personally like my fast boards to have either a wide wheelbase or deck. A wide wheelbase is the distance between the wheels across. The width of the deck gives the board more stability and gives you a stronger centre of gravity. Likewise with the deck width. More width gives you more room to ground down your feet on the board. Balance is everything, so these two features make a world of a difference when riding e boards very fast.

2. Decent Braking Capabilities

Just as you want to make sure that your e board is fast enough, you also want to be sure that it can stop well! Looking for a board with good braking is important. Ideally the braking should be smooth and not jarring but should be able to come to a relatively fast stop.

I personally like e skateboards with 3 or 4 braking modes of different intensity. That way I can choose between a soft or a firm brake and not be thrown off because of unexpected intensity.

Specifications

Along with the factors that determine fast boards there are also many considerations that you may want to take into account depending on your personal circumstances

1. Speed

Generally if you are looking for a board to use for fast commuting/urban travel/recreation, a board that can travel around the 26-32 MPH range suffices.

Riding a board in urban areas any faster than these speeds won't be permitted due to the laws and regulations associated with riding electric skateboards around traffic areas.

To see the laws regarding electric skateboard travel in your state be sure to read our article about this.

2. Battery/Range

Riding an electric skateboard at its fastest speed will see that the battery is unable to last as long as normal due to the increase exertion of the motor in producing the energy required to travel at its maximum capacity.

Choosing an electric skateboard with regenerative braking is a good option to combat battery running out faster than normal.

3. Regenerative Braking

Regenerative braking is a braking feature that when you slow your electric skateboard, the electricity is redirected back into the battery, charging it. Regenerative breaking is a great feature when saving charge, however it is not recommended that you use this feature when on a full battery as the battery is unable to accept anymore electricity and the braking feature is redundant. You can learn more about braking here.

Safety Considerations

Are These Boards Beginner or Child-Friendly?

The fastest boards on the market may hit fast top speeds, but basically all have multiple different modes of riding - which include beginner mode meaning it can be ridden by all levels.

It can be daunting to think of your board riding out of control - however don’t let this deter you from buying any of the boards on our list (with the exception of the Nextgen probably)

Together with the handheld remote it is easy to set the speed at the desired modes to travel as slow (or as fast) as you need.

Our opinion on children riding these, is the same - let them know how to set the board at the beginner mode as well as how to control the throttle to ensure they ride at an easy and safe pace as they familiarize themselves with riding.

For everyone we recommend wearing the proper safety equipment, especially a suitable helmet. Check out our blog guide to the must have electric skateboard safety equipment.

Safe Riding Tips

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Consider other safety equipment including elbow and knee guards
  • Familiarise yourself with the braking before you test out the top speeds
  • When riding at night ensure you carry a light and wear reflective gear
  • Practise ‘safe’ falling incase of an unexpected situation
  • Don’t ride at speeds above your ability

Conclusion on the Fastest Electric Skateboards

Fast electric skateboards are plenty of fun, but you should keep in mind a few things which can enhance your riding experience.

Obviously your first guide to choosing should be to look at each board's top speed. All our reviews on our fast electric and regular e boards include the speed.

A number of factors can dictate the high speed the board can reach beyond the max speed that the brand states. The maximum weight is important as riding on a board that can't handle the weight will travel slower and reduce the riding experience.

Motor and battery also play huge roles and getting a board with a great motor (wheel drive or belt drive) and high battery functionality is a must. Who wants the battery to run out when you are riding?!

A fast electric skateboard also has great build quality. The best deck materials such as carbon fiber, fiberglass, maple, bamboo and even composite. I personally am a fan of the carbon fiber and composite deck.

Then bonus features such as lights and getting a water resistant board are also bonus considerations.

Then to wrap up our top picks. We love the Meepo boards as well as the Backfire boards.

The AWD is one of the fastest and has long range and so makes it high on our list. The V3 is still good, but the range isn't as high - this is a good choice is you are budget restricted however. Finally the Backfire Zealot is top quality carbon fiber e board that has a high speed and great range but a long charging time.
