All About the Fastest Electric Skateboards

We have compiled all our knowledge on finding a great top speed electric skateboard on this list. Hopefully our buying guide can answer all your questions.

What Determines Top Speed?

1. Motor

The greater the power of the boards motor usually equates to the greater top speeds. We recommend choosing boards of 1000 Watts or over, for greater speeds.

2. Terrain

It is important to note that manufacturers have calculated top speed traveling on a flat, even surface. Traveling on rough terrains or up hills won't see the board travel as fast due to the greater

3. Wheel Size

In general, large wheels have a overall higher top speed but lower acceleration and have less torque and agility. Smaller wheels have better torque and acceleration but lesser top speed.

4. Battery Remaining

As the battery runs out of charge, its ability to produced top speeds for prolonged periods significantly decreases as the board is unable to produce the power required. Ensure you board is fully charged before riding or carry a spare battery with you.

Check out this awesome video - which is a culmination of all these factors leading to a world record for the fastest speed travelled on an electric skateboard - 68 MPH?!

Specifications

1. Speed

Generally if you are looking for a board to use for fast commuting/urban travel/recreation, a board that can travel around the 26-32 MPH range suffices.

Riding a board in urban areas any faster than these speeds won't be permitted due to the laws and regulations associated with riding electric skateboards around traffic areas.

To see the laws regarding electric skateboard travel in your state be sure to read our article about this.

2. Battery/Range

Riding an electric skateboard at its fastest speed will see that the battery is unable to last as long as normal due to the increase exertion of the motor in producing the energy required to travel at its maximum capacity.

Choosing an electric skateboard with regenerative braking is a good option to combat battery running out faster than normal.

3. Regenerative Braking

Regenerative braking is a braking feature that when you slow your electric skateboard, the electricity is redirected back into the battery, charging it. Regenerative breaking is a great feature when saving charge, however it is not recommended that you use this feature when on a full battery as the battery is unable to accept anymore electricity and the braking feature is redundant. You can learn more about braking here.

Safety Considerations

Are These Boards Beginner or Child-Friendly?

The fastest boards on the market may hit fast top speeds, but basically all have multiple different modes of riding - which include beginner mode meaning it can be ridden by all levels.

It can be daunting to think of your board riding out of control - however don’t let this deter you from buying any of the boards on our list (with the exception of the Nextgen probably)

Together with the handheld remote it is easy to set the speed at the desired modes to travel as slow (or as fast) as you need.

Our opinion on children riding these, is the same - let them know how to set the board at the beginner mode as well as how to control the throttle to ensure they ride at an easy and safe pace as they familiarize themselves with riding.

We actually have a guide we made for the best kids electric skateboards so check it out!

For everyone we recommend wearing the proper safety equipment, especially a suitable helmet. Check out our blog guide to the must have electric skateboard safety equipment.

Safe Riding Tips

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Consider other safety equipment including elbow and knee guards
  • Familiarise yourself with the braking before you test out the top speeds
  • When riding at night ensure you carry a light and wear reflective gear
  • Practise ‘safe’ falling incase of an unexpected situation
  • Don’t ride at speeds above your ability
